IMPORTANT RULE INTERPRETATION FOR 2005

Kevin Ryan, Director of Umpire of the Amateur Softball Association, has issued the following rule interpretation for rule #3, Section 5, E – HELMETS – All Junior Olympic Fast Pitch batting helmets shall be equipped with a securely fastened NOCSAE approved face mask guard.

The official rule interpretation is as follows:

1) No helmets or masks will be grand fathered.

2) Both the helmet and the face guard have to have the NOCSAE seal to be approved.

3) A one-piece helmet and mask, MOLDED AS ONE PIECE, needs only one NOCSAE approved seal. As of right now, 12/13/04, the Amateur Softball Association’s National Office is unaware of any manufacturer that makes this type of batting helmet.

4) There is no restriction on which face mask is on which helmet as long as it is securely fastened, properly in the umpire’s opinion, and both the mask and the helmet has the NOCSAE seal.
